5 Movie Characters I’d like to Drink a Beer With

by Billy Broas

TV is a big letdown these days. The abundance of reality shows has killed quality programming, with a few exceptions and of course HBO.

So thank God for movies.

My Netflix queue is backed up like D.C. traffic. Even if there are no good new movies out, I can go back and watch a classic. Movies don’t let me down.

So forget Kim Kardashian, here are real entertainers. These are the top 5 movie characters I want to drink a beer with.

The Dude

Ok this one is obvious and probably makes every guy’s top 5. The Dude is a legend. If we went out drinking, I think I would actually ditch beer and drink a White Russian with him. I would hope he’d bring Walter, too.

Let’s move on to a more obscure one.

Inigo Montoya

Inigo Montoya
“Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”

From the movie The Princess Bride (bad name), it’s one of the greatest lines in movie history in my opinion. The video doesn’t embed, so watch it here. If you don’t get chills at Inigo’s last line there is something wrong with you. A dude spends his whole life searching for the six-fingered man who killed his father so he can kill him back. Yea, I’d have a beer with him. He even has his own t-shirt.

Ace Ventura

Jim Carrey’s best character, period. Ace is absolutely insane and hilarious. Ace 1 & 2 are two of the few movies that I can watch over and over again and laugh out loud every time. Beers with this guy would be legendary.

Gandalf

Of course I would go to the bar with a freaking wizard. Gandalf is the coolest one, too (ahem, Dumbledore..). When he’s not battling Balrogs, he’s smoking pipeweed and shooting off fireworks. What’s not to like?

Frank the Tank

Who I believe is Will Ferrel’s 2nd greatest movie character, behind Ron Burgundy. Frank would be more fun to drink with though. Give him a beer bong and then sit back and watch the show.

Runners up: King Leonidas, Tony Montana, Willy Wonka (Johnny Depp, he’s twisted), Sarah Conner (see, I got a woman in there.)

Your turn! Let’s hear your top 5.

Awesome idea for a post. I’m not so sure that Inego Montoya is an obscure character but then again all geeks know of The Princess Bride.

My top five to share a beer with:
1. Kevin Flynn – Tron
2. Morpheus – The Matrix
3. Kate Libby ‘Acid Burn’ – Hackers
4. Alex Hitchens – Hitch
5. Hagrid from Harry Potter

I’m always surprised when my friends don’t know who Inigo Montoya is, but yea I should have realized that beer geeks are often movie geeks lol. Will Smith is a good choice in any of his characters. I also really like the Hagrid selection, though it could be dangerous going beer for beer with that guy.

Great Idea… here are some of mine (there are way more than 5)

Sci-Fi
1. Han Solo (Star Wars) – dude is just too awesome, made the term “smuggler” cool.
2. Captain Malcom Reynolds (Firefly/Serenity) – Space Cowboy extrordinaire
3. Montgomery Scott (Star Trek) – True, he prefers whiskey, but any pint in a storm, right?
4. Ripley (Alien) – One of the most kick-ass heroines of all time.
5. Starbuck (Battlestar Galactica) – take your pick between cheesy and fun original or fiesty and hot new version, either would be a blast.

Fantasy
1. Mad Mardigan (Willow) – crazy and dnagerous, and the self-proclaimed greatest swordman who ever lived.
2. Inigo Montoya (Princess Bride) – The ACTUAL greatest swordsman who ever lived.
3. Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took (Lord of the Rings) – Are you kidding? These guys know how to drink BEER!
4. Lili (Legend) – Mia Sara in black leather and goth makeup. ‘Nuff said.
5. Isabeau d’Anjou (Ladyhawke) – Knows how to take care of a wild animal.

Other
1. Ash (Evil Dead/Army of Darkness)
2. Captain Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean)
3. Indiana Jones (Raiders of the Lost Ark)
4. Jack Burton (Big Trouble In Little China)
5. John McLane (Die Hard)

Epic list Sean, and so well organized! I completely forgot about Die Hard and Star Trek – those are great ones. I need to give Battlestar Galactica a try sometime. Everyone says that it’s excellent and that it would be much more popular if it wasn’t for the name. Thanks for the comment.

2. Rusty Ryan — Ocean’s Eleven (2001)
3. Danny Ocean — Ocean’s Eleven (2001)
4. Basher Tarr — Ocean’s Eleven (2001) (do you sense I love this movie?)
5. Yoda — Any of the Star Wars films

Haha I’m guessing you own Ocean’s 11, maybe even more than one copy ; ) Yoda is a terrific choice. I’m sure he’d have some cool bar tricks.

Way too many to choose from, but here are a few:

1.) Doc Holiday (Val Kilmer)
2.)Mike McDermott and Worm (Rounders)
3.) Clark Griswold (Vacation)
4.) Trent (Vince Vaughn-Swingers)
5.) Bluto (Animal House)

Yea it was really hard getting to 5. This could easily be a top 50 list. Vince Vaughn is a great choice and I especially like Bluto. He’s like Frank the Tank of the previous generation. Nice picks.

Neville Flynn is a hilarious choice. I can’t believe I own that movie, but I really do like it. I was actually thinking about adding Sam Jackson’s Pulp Fiction character, Jules. I just want to hear him say that bible passage.

It’s funny to see Army of Darkness pop up more than once. Such a great cult classic. I didn’t know what to think when I first saw it but now I love it. #3 is your best pick though, and that explanation is hilarious. That’s a perfect scene for a spoof movie like Meet the Spartans.

In no particular order:
1) John Adams–not present in the HBO series is his deep and abiding love of beer and morning cider.
2) William Wallace–any questions?
3) Butch Cassidy
4) Dick Winters, from Band of Brothers, although refusing to drink himself, I might have to go with Lewis Nixon or Bill Guarnere .

*NOTE: if Gunnery Sergeant Hartmann from Full Metal Jacket were based on a real person, he would have to fit in here as well.
