I’ve never reviewed a beer on this blog.
Strange, huh?
Sure I’ve talked about different beers and what I thought about them, but I’ve never done what you would call a “review post”.
There’s no secret strategy behind it. I really just don’t think I have much to add beyond the hundreds of sites that do beer reviews. Plus I only post once a week, so when I do post I want it to be something a little different.
No I’m not going to give in here and do a review, but I do want to do something cool along those lines.
The Types of Beer Reviews
I read beer reviews often and am fascinated by the all of the different ways there are to do the same thing – describe beer. Not everyone likes reading beer reviews. I myself get tired of them, and let’s face it, some are just not fun to read.
But maybe you just haven’t read (or watched) the right type.
Here are 10 different beer review formats that I dug up from across the web. See if any of them really click with you.
- The collaborative
- The video review
- The super short video
- The expletive-laden
- The poetic
- The innovative
- The experiential
- The BJCP
- The wine drinker’s beer review
- The wordless
Are there any of these you really enjoy above the rest?

My review format is the ever famous Random and Boring . Pretty much the style I use for the whole blog. Consistency is good.
Hey I give you big points for the snowy Maharaja picture. Look at that thing glow!
It is a beautiful beer.
I don’t enjoy watching videos of people drinking beer telling me what I wish I was drinking…even if it’s just 60 seconds. Although, that video with the wine guys is super funny, I’d watch that.
I prefer the wordless. I also don’t mind reading a paragraph or two of something that is really succinct or that takes me on a journey (like Pencil and Spoon). More than a couple paragraphs and I get bored.
Nice, thoughtful post. Thanks!
To me it’s not only about the format, but the delivery. For example some video reviews I can’t watch but others I really enjoy.
I think Mark’s review is fantastic. I really like that style. Gary V. could be entertaining if he were reviewing water. Love that guy.
Thanks for the comment Eric.
I like reviews where, by the end, I have a good idea of what the beer will taste like – delivery just decides which site I will come back to. In some ways it is the beers that are reviewed which is more important – if the beer is soo rare that nobody reading is going to be able to try it themselves then the reviewer needs to put more effort into making the review an interesting read.
You make good points. I think a key thing many reviewers miss is taking a reader-centered approach. If you begin a review by asking yourself “what would the reader enjoy” then you’re off to the right start.
